Gradually, through the XJS and XK8, the XK concept has evolved away from being an out-and-out sports car and more towards being a refined grand tourer. The XK must fill dual roles as a cosseting grand tourer at one end of the model range, and a full-blown hardcore sports car on the other – that role previously taken by the hairy XKR-S model, the most powerful car in the company’s long history.

After that Jaguar launched a supercharged supercar in the form of the XKR. The designers of the Jaguar XKR Convertible say they styled it first before starting on the Coupe, which explains why it looks so good. With 313 litres of load space, it is a practical tourer too. Power comes from a mighty 503bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8, which rockets the XKR Convertible from 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds. The steering is direct, retaining feel, clarity and linearity. It’s perfect for making GT-style progress that all the best Jaguars are famous for. There’s also a Dynamic Mode, accessed by a chequered flag switch on the centre console. Pressing that tightens and tautens the suspension, readying the XK for spirited B-road progress.
